Sockets, xmpp and polling to node.js - performant and server friendly -

I am making a webpage and may need some help. The app has got chat and some news systems. That's why we write a lot and need constant updates of information. At the beginning of the project, we can not host many servers due to financial problems. So I was wondering, what is the most server-friendly way to do this. Which approach requires minimal server resources? Can somebody help me out?

Voting - I request new data through AJAX every 60 seconds - no connection to be established in two ways

xmpp - I Recently it has heard - if somebody is a protocol, then explain it in some sentences?

socket.io - A connection is established in two ways but the server can crash very fast because it can only control the limited amount of connections

Information is not required on display. I need to know that it is more efficient to make many single requests on the server or better to establish a connection. I have read a lot of articles on it but my question has not yet been given a very good answer. Talk about my bad english, not my main spoken language.

Thanks everyone!

Your request is not very clear what exactly is the issue? Being able to support the required number of writing or to manage multi-users concurrently?

My suggestion is to make a decision on the proper, simple architecture and then after they appear they have to fix the barriers.
